Just an hour's drive from Salzburg are Wagrain, Flachau, and St Johann. All three alpine villages have a rich selection of lush après ski, cozy walking paths, and culinary experiences. It is the three larger villages that have endless skiing for all levels and are part of Snow Space Salzburg. But our top tip is an unexplored gem - Zauchensee. Don't tell anyone!

But let's start our journey in Salzburg - with its cobbled streets and medieval architecture, it's a city that breathes history and cultural treasures. Exploring all the picturesque alleyways and visiting iconic sites such as the Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mirabell Palace is like taking a trip back in time. We spontaneously exclaim over and over again - "It's so beautiful here!"

Did you know that the Sound of Music was recorded in the Salzburg Land region?

Ski resorts near Salzburg

But it's not just the city's smorgasbord of architecture and history that attracts visitors from near and far. Salzburg is just a short drive from some of Austria's best ski resorts - making it the perfect starting point for your ski trip.

Wagrain, Flachau, and especially the small Alpine village of Zauchensee are ski resorts that offer something for everyone, whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier. With their well-groomed slopes, modern lift systems, and fantastic snow conditions, it's easy to see why so many return here year after year. All three areas, together with St. Johann, are part of Snow Space Salzburg.

Wagrain is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and wide slopes, perfect for skiing with children. Flachau attracts the more adventurous skiers with more challenging terrain and off-piste opportunities. Zauchensee, with its high altitudes and snow-sure location, is a paradise for free-riders and skiers looking for adventure.

But skiing isn't the only thing Salzburg Snow Space’s ski resorts have to offer. After a day on the slopes, you can unwind with a refreshing skiwasser at a traditional alpstube or relax in one of the many spas in the area.

Have you heard of ski legend Hermann Maier? He's a former World Cup champion alpine skier and Olympic gold medallist from the small village of Altenmarkt im Pongau, located at the foot of Flachau. Nicknamed the 'Herminator', Maier ranks among the greatest alpine skiers in history, with four overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals and three World Championship titles. You will ski at least as well as The Herminator when you visit Snow Space Salzburg. 😉

So, whether you're after thrilling skiing, a taste of Austrian culture or just a chance to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery, Salzburg and its surrounding ski resorts have everything you need for the perfect ski trip. Pack your best ski outfit and book your next adventure in Austria right away!

Things to do in Salzburg

We really recommend checking in for a night at a Gasthof up on the mountain. After skiing, you can enjoy a spa, a 3-course dinner, and a good night's sleep. The next morning, you'll be on the slopes before the lifts open, and you'll have them all to yourself—that's a real luxury!
